Mt. Kenya (17,058′)

(7 & 10 days)

Technical and Non-Technical ascents on one of Africa’s most alluring mountains!

Join Mountain Guides International on a one of a kind journey to the central highlands of Kenya. Mt Kenya is Africa’s second tallest mountain next to Kilimanjaro, and is located just 17 kilometers south of the equator. The climbing here is world class and ranges from high altitude trekking, to alpine rock climbing, and some of the finest ice climbing on the planet! Mt Kenya National Park, which encompasses the mountain and the surrounding 715 sq km was recently designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO for being “one of the most impressive landscapes of Eastern Africa with it’s rugged glacier clad summits, Afro-alpine moorlands and diverse forests which illustrate outstanding ecological processes.” The mountain itself is actually an amalgamation of peaks, spires and pinnacles. The three most imposing of which being Point Lenana (16,355 ft), Batian (17,058 ft), and Nelion (17,022 ft). Point Lenana is accessible by trekking and offers exceptional views of the park, while Batian and Nelion are only ascended by technical climbing and are therefore unfrequented; it is not uncommon to have the whole peak to yourself!

OUR GUIDES: We have American guides on every trip. Professional AMGI guides accompany every one of our trips. This guarantees that your trip is run to our high standards. It also adds a level of safety not found with other companies. These guides have high altitude experience from around the world and are certified in advanced first aid.

-Sat phones on every trip

SAFETY: Mountain Guides International has a perfect safety record. We have had no major injuries or accidents in more than fifteen years of operation. This is not happenstance; your safety is our highest priority. We were the first guide service to carry satellite phones on all of our trips and continue to use them on every trip. We also carry pulse oximeters, stethoscopes, and expedition first aid kits on all treks on climbs that go to altitude. No other company exceeds our level of safety!

SANITATION: MGI has set the standards of sanitation in many of the areas that we operate. We work closely with Mountain Safety Research and use their MIOX water purification system on most trips needing purified water. We also use iodine to treat water and recognize the fact that it takes longer to purify cold water. This is critical in Africa, use caution with services that use only boiled water. The water rarely gets fully boiled, which means the bugs are alive. Do not trust your adventure to a guide service that does not provide a reliable water treatment system!

SAFARI OPTIONS: Climbing on Mt Kenya can easily be combined with safaris in several of Africa’s finest wildlife viewing areas including: Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro Crater, and the Serengeti.
