Day 1: Quito
   Arrive in Quito, the capital city of Ecuador. It is a beautiful city nestled into the foothills of the Andes at an elevation of just over 9,000 ft. Quito is an interesting city with lots of fascinating markets and history to explore.

Day 2: Historic District
   While acclimating, we explore some of the unique cultural sights Quito has to offer. We'll make a visit to 'old town' and the equator as our local guide introduces the cultural framework of today's Ecuadorian society.

Day 3 - 4: Guagua Pichincha
   Located above Quito at an elevation of 15,000 ft., Pichincha offers spectacular views of Quito and surrounding peaks, and provides for a great acclimatization opportunity. We'll spend the night in the town of Loa, a beautiful village at the base of the mountain.

Day 5 - 7: Illiniza Norte Volcano Climb
   We camp below the mountains at 13,000ft. as a stage for our ascent up to the hut the following day. At just below 17,000 ft. the rocky peak of Illiniza Norte is a spectacular ascent in its own right.

Day 7: Avenue of the Volcanoes
   We spend a relaxing day at a quaint hostel with outstanding views of 16 surrounding volcanoes.

Day 8 - 10: Cotopaxi Summit (19,347 ft)
   Spending two nights up on Cotopaxi at the hut (14,500ft) allows us to cover the necessary glacier skills needed for the climb, and gain additional acclimatization. Summit day on Cotopaxi is generally 10 to 12 hours. There is fantastic climbing and great views. A pre-dawn start puts us high on the mountain as the sun comes up. Don't forget your camera!

Day 11: Quito
   Back to Quito for a last bit of exploring, or, shopping. This is also an extra day that gives us ability to modify the itinerary to maximize acclimatization and allow for inclement weather.

Day 12: Flights Home


This itinerary is designed to provide individuals with a positive high altitude experience. It allows time for weather and acclimatization days. The 12-day can be extended to a 16-day trip to climb Chimborazo and explore the town of Banos.
